Membership Makes a Difference
The Accessible Waterways Association wants to inform, represent, and assist people who live with disabilities, impairments or accessibility issues, and who want to enjoy the Inland Waterways and their surrounding environments.
We want to work with the various waterways authorities, and will lobby MPs and Peers as appropriate. But we need the input of members’ experiences and needs. Whoever and wherever you are, we value our members.
Personal Membership
The Accessible Waterways Association is primarily set up for anyone who has any form of accessibility needs. Not necessarily an acknowledged disability. People with pushchairs, shopping trolleys, cyclists, etc, also come across accessibility issues that affect them. We do not discriminate against anyone. Our aim is to make the waterways accessible for all.
Personal membership includes up to two adults and any under 18s at the same address.
We offer a discount for a person with a disability. Their personal membership must be in the name of that person. You may add another adult (partner/carer) for joint benefits. As above, any children under the age of 18 resident at the same address may also be included.
In order to qualify for disabled membership, we do need to see evidence of your disability, but don’t want to make it complicated. To achieve this, we will simply require a copy of one of the following:
- Current DWP award letter.
- Current Car Blue Badge.
- Disabled Person’s Bus Pass.
- Disabled Person’s Rail Card.
- Letter from a medical professional relevant to disability.
- Other appropriate evidence (eg letter from a doctor, priest, etc).
Qualifying personal members will also be able to apply for our free Boaters’ Blue Card, intended to inform others that there may be someone aboard the boat who could be less aware of, or able to react to passers-by.
Junior membership is available to anyone under the age of 18 who wants to join. Any under 18 with a disability can also join, along with up to 2 named adults/carers.
